                  CHAPTER-39-SG-Y-2-S-4 (WINTER)

The town of Winfield was waking up to the first morning of the winter in 1854 and it was a clear sunny day. They'd spent the fall preparing for winter to arrive and it had finally come. They all hoped it would be nothing like that previous winter in 1853 when it was cold and they had to battle endless blizzards all winter with temperatures so cold the mercury in the thermometers kept freezing. It had dragged on into spring with the snow being late in melting and that was followed by endless heavy downpours of rain for days. The river rose and almost flooded out the bridge.
Their hopes were that this was to be a soft and mild winter or at least a brown one after the problems they'd had in the previous winter like the French tourists who'd gotten lost in a blizzard on vacation in Winfield and who's remains were found in the spring thaw later.Others in the area had gone missing when a blizzard brought a sudden end to a winter chinook which drew locals out to get errands done they couldn't tend to in the blizzards.
Lee was playing with her puppy Spot early on the first winter morning in Winfield and she was glad to be living there instead of in the city. She knew that Spot wasn't going to be a puppy for much longer and would be an adult soon.It was to be one of those clear sunny winter days that could be enjoyable for outings. The other families in town were also enjoying the sunny day. They all knew that sunny weather might give way to a severe blizzard.
There was something odd going on with the Ivanovitch farm in the night and it involved Tanner investigating some strange event. It led to her getting abducted by aliens in the night. The weather was clear and sunny again the next day and the town was still left wondering if they might get snow the next day. They had still been clear this far into the previous winter and it had already gotten very cold unlike now. They were willing to accept an easy winter.
Eli and Ami Jankowsky were both busy studying to learn new skills on their iPads a few days later and it was still clear and sunny like every other day that winter had been so far.It had been snowing with drifts covering the roads by this point in 1853.Everybody was going to remeber that as the longest and hardest winter in history.Everbody in town was getting themselves to work at their jobs every day and they were all studying their skills.
Lee woke up to another sunny day and to the fact that Spot was growing up later on that day.It would be her last day to enjoy Spot as a puppy before her puppy grew up and became an adult. They'd both enjoyed themselves all day and Spot grew up later in the evening after it got dark out. They got excited about being able to learn to hunt and gather the collectibles though Spot had to learn to hunt first before being able to do it on her own.
Lee got started on teaching Spot to hunt the next morning which was clear and sunny though it was very cold that day.Spot managed to learn hunting fairly quickly and they had to deal with the other daily tasks like tending the garden and household chores. It was obviously not the same kind of winter they'd had in 1853 though it got below freezing a lot.It had remained dry and they still had seen no snow at all so far that winter and that was fine.
Tanner and Tracy Ivanovitch were busy tending their garden a few days later after there'd been two dull cloudy days with fog and this had been a very cold clear day once again. They both had to work together to tend this garden because there was a lot to do.They were both busy for most of the day and managed to get ready for work later on after getting the daily household chores finished in the afternoon. They were still working at the bookstore.
They had to get through another work day and get through the evening after work before getting to bed for the night. It had been cold enough to wear outerwear when they went outside though they took it off inside. It also looked like the local fishing pond was about to start to freeze over and become a skating rink if the cold continued for another day.The other residents in town were also tending to their chores and getting to work every day.
It dawned clear and sunny a day later though it was so cold the pond was frozen solid and perfect for skating. They went over to enjoy themselves there after tending to the household chores in the morning and stayed for a while that morning. It was partly cloudy with the sun shining and the temperature was well below freezing. They'd been noticing some strange activity going on near the town hall like a house being built on a new farm.
The work crew had started working on that farmhouse because they'd heard of a new family expected to arrive in the spring and wanted the house to be ready early in case they arrived early. The new arrivals were 15 year old Des Campbell with her almost 15 year old husband Ashley and their two year old Sandi who was just a toddler and they were looking for a chance at a better life. They wanted to be able to own their home and to be free of poverty.
They saw that their new house was a bit small though they could add a new room to be a second bedroom. They knew they were going to need that very soon because Sandi was less than a year away from becoming a child and would need a proper bed. They had a lot to teach her and she had a lot to learn before she was ready for childhood. She would start in the school of the streets after her third birthday and be going out daily to study skills or fish.
It was late winter when the Campbells arrived and their first few days in town were very hectic with a lot of confusion as they were getting settled into their new home. They knew that their lot was big even if the house was very small which meant they could add to the house if they needed a bigger house.Their first days went by with Ashley registering as unemployed while Des got a job at the spa working part time to help with earning money.
The town of Winfield had manged to get through another winter and this one had been a very gentle winter without any snow falling and it had been mild compared to the previous winter. There'd been a lot of early travels to new homes by new immigrants over the later part of winter. The next thing they all had to do was to get ready for spring to arrive in the morning and get ready to welcome the new year since 1854 was over and it would be 1855 in the morning when they got up.It was time to start using up the leftovers and to start getting into preserved food if their produce wasn't ready for harvest yet.
